“Give Every Child the Chance to Smile”

Smile Train is an international children’s charity with a sustainable approach to a single, solvable problem: cleft lip and palate.

Many children with untreated clefts around the world live in isolation, but more importantly, have difficulty eating, breathing, hearing, and speaking. Cleft repair surgery is safe, and the transformation is immediate. Smile Train’s sustainable model provides training, funding, and resources to empower local medical professionals in 90+ countries to provide 100 %-free cleft repair surgery and comprehensive cleft care to children in their own communities.

As a result of their efforts, and with the support of their donors and partners around the world, Smile Train has transformed the lives of more than 1.5 million children by giving them the power of a smile.

What is Cleft?

Globally, 1 in every 700 babies is born with a cleft lip and/or palate. Clefts cause difficulties eating, breathing, hearing, and speaking.

It is not known exactly what the cause of a cleft is, but it is generally agreed amongst experts to be multifactorial. Some of these factors may include genetic predisposition, as well as environmental issues such as drug and alcohol use, smoking, maternal illness, infections, or lack of Vitamin B. A cleft can occur when the lip and/or roof of the mouth do not fuse together during foetal development. Cleft is a treatable condition, however many children with clefts around the world will never receive the reconstructive surgery and comprehensive treatment they need.

Smile Train is committed to treating the whole patient through programs that provide access to important comprehensive cleft care services.

Comprehensive cleft care includes essential treatments beyond cleft surgery, such as nutrition services, orthodontic and general dental care, speech therapy and emotional support, intended to ensure long-term, successful rehabilitation for the cleft patients Smile Train supports.

Smile Train empowers local medical professionals through providing training, equipment and technology. Since 1999, Smile Train has helped build local communities so that they can learn to support themselves through education, outreach campaigns, and crucial financial aid to keep cleft treatment 100% free for the patients.
